The Birthday Boy

Our biggest boy turned 4 today!  Even though it does feel like time goes fast, I guess I was prepared for him to be 4 since I was basically already calling him 4 for the past little while.  Corbin decided he wanted a Mater cake for his birthday months ago and it hadn't changed every time I asked him.  I thought making an actual Mater cake would be too hard, so I decided to make a road cake with the Cars characters on it.

Corbin was lucky to get his granparents from Utah to come visit for his birthday so he was able to have a big family party!  He woke up on the morning of his birthday to the house decorated.  He couldn't spend too much time enjoying everything since we still had to get ready for church.

After church, the boys helped make the cupcakes.

Then Nana and I frosted the cake and cupcakes.  Here is the final product.

We had family over and I made his favorite foods for dinner.  Meatballs, pizza, assorted fruits and veggies, applesauce.  It was a weird mixture of foods but it was Corbin's birthday so he got to choose.

Then we had cake!

His favorite part was opening the presents.  He got LOTS of presents.

Thanks to everyone who helped make Corbin's birthday great!

Here's a few things about Corbin at age 4:

-37 lbs (60th percentile)
-40 1/2 inches (50th percentile)
–He still has a great memory and his latest thing has been to memorize how to spell words.  We basically only need to teach him once and then he remembers them.  He's also been sounding out letter sounds which I think he must have learned at school.
-He still loves music and singing and is constantly amazing me with all the songs he knows.  He will sing to most of the Adele songs on the radio among others.  He also just perfectly sang "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" BACKWARDS to me.  He even did the face parts correctly backwards.  I was pretty impressed.  He also was singing songs he learned in primary within weeks of his very first Sunday.  I thought Sunbeams (usually) didn't pay attention during primary.  Apparently, Corbin does, at least for music time.
-I can't talk about Corbin without one aspect of his personality that brings Connor and I the most joy out of anything.  He is SO darn sweet.  Of course, he has his moments like every child (and every human) has, but generally he is such a sweet, loving, sensitive boy.  He is affectionate but he is EXTREMELY affectionate to his mom, dad, and brother.  We are often getting hugs and kisses and "I love you's" throughout the day for no apparent reason.  (He now has a baby doll that he pretends is his sister and is this way with the doll too.)  He is definitely sensitive to others feelings, especially to mom and dad's.  One day, after a particular hard tantrum from Corbin, and I was trying to explain to him why I was upset, I couldn't hold in the tears.  Corbin just sat there looking at me crying and tears started welling up in his eyes.  The whole rest of the afternoon, Corbin kept saying to me, "I'm sorry for screaming, Mom.  I'm sorry for getting angry."  He also is such a good friend.  He knows the names of his classmates and he wants to play with them.  Sometimes it's hard to see other kids ignoring him or not being as nice to him.  But I know this is a part of life that I can't protect him from.  The other day, though, it melted my heart to see how friendly Corbin was to his classmates.  I drove for a field trip they were having and when we got to the place and he saw some of his class waiting, he went up to each of them and said "hi" and seemed genuinely excited to see them.  He even pointed out a watch that one of the kids was wearing and said "Cool watch" which instantly made that kid happy.  I'm sure his naiveté has somewhat to do with this but I do also think this will be a part of his personality forever.  (At least I hope so.)

I found a list of questions to ask each year on their birthday and decided to do it.  Here are the questions and his answers.

1.  What is your favorite color?  Red
2.  What is your favorite toy?  Buzz Lightyear
3.  What is your favorite fruit?  Bananas
4.  What is your favorite tv show?  Cars 2 (I don't think he's ever watched a show on tv live.  We do mostly movies using Netflix or the AppleTv, so it's hard to differentiate between tv shows and movies anyways.)
5.  What is your favorite thing to eat for lunch?  Mac N Cheese
6.  What is your favorite outfit?  Comfies  (This is what we call sweats or athletic pants/shorts that he usually gets to change into after church.)
7.  What is your favorite game?  Memory
8.  What is your favorite snack?  Goldfish
9.  What is your favorite animal?  Goat, cow, sheep, pig, horse (I guess he wants to live on a farm.)
10.  What is your favorite song?  I am a Child of God
11.  What is your favorite book?  Sesame Street book (I would actually say it's Green Eggs and Ham but these are his answers)
12.  Who is your best friend?  Andy
13.  What is your favorite cereal?  Cinnamon Toast Crunch
14.  What is your favorite thing to do outside?  Go on the grass
15.  What is your favorite drink?  Apple juice
16.  What is your favorite holiday?  Christmas.  He also added, "I like Christmas presents!"
17.  What do you like to take to bed with you at night?  Tent (His Nana and Papa were staying with us using Corbin's room so Corbin was at the time sleeping in our room in his new Thomas tent.)
18.  What do you want for dinner on your birthday?  Meaballs, pizza, bananas, carrots
19.  What do you want to be when you grow up?  To work at Nana and Papa's house

Happy Valentine's Day

I'm pretty sure that everyone who reads this blog already knows what it is, but I might as well do an announcement anyway.  It's a…

Duke baby girl Ultrasound

I had pretty much convinced myself that it would be a boy so I was extremely shocked.  The ultrasound tech didn't see the gender while she was doing her normal measurements so she looked for it at the end.  She asked what number baby this was and what we already had.  Then she said, "So do you want a girl?"  I said, "I don't care." Then she said, "Well, it's a girl!"  She triple checked I think because we were so surprised.  She gave her disclaimer that it's only 60-70 perecent accurate.  But then she says "It looks pretty for sure a girl though."

We are super excited to have a girl.  And I'm super excited to start buying girly things!!!
